A year since his death, Piccioni’s collection is now on display
HIS COLLECTION OF WORKS REVEALS
AND MULTIFACETED, CRYSTAL CLEAR TASTE
Villa Bertelli – the main cultural hub in Forte dei Marmi – is now housing “Burri Morandi and Other Friends. Leone Piccioni’s Love of Art.” The exhibition, which takes place a year since Piccioni’s death, is not intended to meet market demands or passing trends, but rather to revive the disinterested principles that led one of the most prestigious art critics in Italy to embark on collecting and to retrace, also thanks to his contacts with intellectuals, poets and artists, almost one hundred years of history. Together with the many historical pictures, videos and writings that prove Piccioni’s voluminous correspondence with most renowned twentieth-century artists, visitors can see the 108 works that make up the collection. Thanks to his heightened sensitivity, Piccioni approached different artistic poetics unbiasedly, sometimes even foreseeing the consecration of certain artists and works by the market and critics. Only a multifaceted, crystal clear taste as his could lead to the building up of such a collection, gathering works by most authoritative and sought-after artists as Afro, Alberto Burri, Alexander Calder, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Carlo Carrà, Mario Ceroli, Piero Dorazio, Jean Fautrier, Giosetta Fioroni, Giorgio Morandi, Ottone Rosai, Mario Schifano and Gino Severini.
THE EXHIBITION SHEDS LIGHT ON THE MEANING
OF A LIFE THAT WAS SPENT
IN THE CONSTANT PURSUIT OF BEAUTY
Thanks to the collaboration of Gloria Piccioni and Piero Pananti, who have contributed to this homage with their personality and kindness, the exhibition allows us to taste the joy Leone Piccioni felt when dedicating to his love of art, and to understand the meaning of his life, which was spent in close contact with beauty.
In order to spark people’s interest in this exhibition, some guided visits will be organized for schools and local associations; in addition, two collateral events will take place in Summer: “Quarto Platano” [“Fourth Plane Tree”] and “Lungara 29. Il caso Montesi nelle lettere a Piero” [“Lungara 29. The Montesi Case in the Letters to Piero”].
AMONG THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS ARTISTS IN THE
COLLECTION, THERE ARE AFRO, BURRI, CALDER,
