ON DISPLAY THERE ARE NOVELLO FINOTTI’S POWERFUL SCULPTURES
An excellent interpreter of marble, an artist able to sculpt dreams
TECHNIQUE, RIGOUR, PASSION AND DESIRE CHARACTERIZE A CREATIVITY THAT DELVES DEEP
Honestly, Novello Finotti has always been a brilliant and unexpectedly sublime sculptor, attracted to an unconventional way of feeling that summons him and isolates him from the world, imposing the most uncompromising rules of art on him.
Exactly one year ago, Finotti reaped his umpteenth success in Matera, among the thousand-year old stones of the rocky churches of Saint Nicholas of the Greeks and of Our Lady of Virtue; he called to order his sculpture – the tale of a man and an artist, a whole life mostly devoted to artistic research – relying on the qualities of matter, which can become humble among humble people without losing its awesomeness and elegance, like ancient stones that accompany eternity as its only travel companion.
Today, however, he is back in his Pietrasanta (at Accesso Gallery, until July the 25th); a desired, looked for and disclosed return, characterised by technique, rigour, passion and yearning. His artistic career has been a constant descent into the depths of that stone he is the only one who can deal with – a symbol of the oxymoron that defines his soul. Infinitely sensitive and constantly subjected to stone the same way he is subjected to the passing of time, he has been creating sculptures that are the first symptoms of that – physical, intellectual, emotional and historical – change to which he and the matter he uses are dedicated, avoiding exaggerated lines and that scholastic juxtaposition of masses that in the works of other artists looks like academicism, but that in his sculptures is just waste, in the most practical sense of the term.
